Welcome to Moving on Durham

Established since 1998, Moving On is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. Its key aim is to break the cycle of youth homelessness in the Durham.

We provide advice; support and practical guidance to help young people aged 16-25 to achieve independence in appropriate accommodation.

Moving On also works with other agencies to develop long-term solutions to problems affecting young people in housing need and is becoming influential in challenging perceptions about youth homelessness in the wider community.

The following are the key service areas provided by Moving On:-

Housing Advice

Moving On provides advice on housing & benefits informing young people of their rights and responsibilities. We also provide support to young people in emergencies helping them secure safe and appropriate accommodation.

Pre-tenancy Support

Moving On gives support throughout the house hunting process taking young people through a reality check that explores the full implications of leaving home and the reality of independence. We assess young people’s support needs in order to offer appropriate ongoing support and help them to plan and prepare for taking on a tenancy.

Floating Support

Moving On provides practical, social and emotional support to young people in their own tenancies through individual support plans to assist with the transition to independence.

Young People’s Group Work

Moving On’s Tenancy Survival Support Group (MO’s Army) gives young people the opportunity to share experiences and be involved in social and educational activities as well as exploring ways they can help other young people in housing need.

Joint Protocol

Homelessness Support Service for 16/17 year olds is an agreement between a number of agencies to work together to meet the needs of 16/17 year olds experiencing or at risk of homelessness.  Partners to the protocol in Durham City are the Local Authority Housing Department, Children and Young Peoples Services Children in Need Teams and Emergency Duty Teams, Connexions County Durham, Youth Engagement Service and Moving On.  The Joint Protocol aims to increase joint working to meet the needs of 16/17 year olds, improve communication between agencies, prevent homlessness, ensure 16/17 year olds get the support they need and access appropriate and suitable accommodation.
