Moving On Made a Difference to Me CC led a chaotic lifestyle from the age of 16 and found it difficult to find employment and training. She had disagreements with her family over her unemployment and her sexuality, and eventually they asked her to leave home. She ‘couch-hopped’ between friends and family members for several months. CC needed a rented property to share with her partner, but when she looked at private rentals in the area she found they were unaffordable. A friend informed CC of the services at Moving On and she came to an Advice Drop In session. As a result of this she was taken onto Floating Support.
Moving On liaised with a range of agencies and managed to find a property for CC with 3 Rivers. We helped her set up home by setting up utility bills, applying for grants for carpets and flooring and vouchers for decorating her property. We talked to her about her issues regarding her sexuality, referred her into relationship counselling, and supported her in finding employment and suitable college courses.
“I’m so much happier and more confident in myself since coming to Moving On, thanks for getting me back on track.”
The support she has received has given her the opportunity to think about her future and decide what career path she would like to take. CC has been successful in finding a full time job with Pizza Express in Durham and has now enrolled onto a three year degree in P.E., sports and dance, which is due to start in September 2010 at Sunderland University. She is enjoying her job very much and feels she has a future now and can move forward.

Moving On Helped Me LG is 20 and first came into contact with Moving On through Durham County Council. LG has Dyslexia and Dysphasia and needed housing support. He had experienced relationship difficulties with his brother which ended in violence. This led to arguments with his Mother and he was asked to leave the family home. He went to live with his Father however there was no room with three younger siblings and tensions were running high. Eventually his father threw him on to the streets. He couch hopped between friends and family for several months.
LG was successful in securing a property. He was then accepted on to our Floating Support service. We applied for grants to help him carpet and furnish his home and helped him set up the various utility bills and plan a budget.
LG had no cooking skills and he was encouraged to attend our lifeskills course. The first 4 weeks of the course covered healthy eating and he found this very helpful. He is now buying healthy food and has learned to cook healthy meals.
LG expressed an interest in further training and we successfully supported him to enrol on an English and Maths course with Adult and Community Learning.
He has also been successful in finding voluntary work in Durham and is feeling a lot happier and more confident. He is now thinking about his future and the career path he would like to take.
“Moving On helped me with my cooking and made me better with my words when speaking in a group. With being Dyslexic they helped me to handle money well”.
