We have worked with NCS for the past few years now, and during that period we have established a strong relationship with the youth programme.

If you have been keeping up to date with our latest news and blogs, you will be aware that Moving On has previously engaged with two NCS teams already this summer. This winter we were lucky enough to be involved with another NCS group from New College Durham - Team 8.

Compared to previous NCS teams, our collaboration with Team 8 was a little different than usual. As part of their social action project, members of Team 8 spent three days assisting members of staff in our office. With Christmas fast approaching, the group even managed to spread some festive cheer by putting up our office Christmas tree, as well as writing Christmas cards for our tenants!

My National Citizen Service (NCS) Story, by Team 8 Members

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government initiative open to all 16 and 17-year-olds in England. It helps young people build skills for work and life, whilst taking on new challenges and meeting new friends. Each NCS programme comprises a short time away from home on a residential, and a team project based in the local community.

NCS brings together young people from different backgrounds and helps them develop great confidence, self-awareness and responsibility. It encourages personal and social development by working on skills like leadership, teamwork and communication. Participants develop a social action project to deal with a local issue they are passionate about, and spend 30 hours putting the project into action in their community.

This autumn, Team 8 set out on their NCS experience and chose the charity Moving On Durham for their social action project. Before spending a few days at the Moving On Durham office, we raised money by running a cake stall, online fundraising, as well as getting donations from local shops and businesses.

Members of Team 8 provided feedback on their journey with NCS and Moving On...

"I joined NCS to make a small difference in the community of Durham. Our team chose Moving On because homelessness amongst young people is becoming more common in our area"

"When I joined (NCS) I did not expect much. I was of the mindset that I might get left out of stuff, but I couldn't have been put in a better group!"

"During the programme we gained team building and life skills, but most importantly we developed friendships"

"It has been a good experience, being with friends but also making new friends and that staff have been really friendly too. I like to know that I have made a difference by seeing what we've achieved. Working with Moving On has done that for me"

Thank you, Team 8!

As mentioned prior, this isn't the first time we have worked with a team from NCS, but Team 8 provided a new and unique perspective as staff were able to witness firsthand the enthusiasm and dedication provided by these young people wanting to make a difference in their local communities.

Moving On Administrator Mark Sutton worked closely with Team 8 during their stay at the office, 'Team 8 are a credit to NCS, New College Durham and the local community, and everyone from Moving On wishes them all the best for the future'.
