Dylan is an 18-year-old who moved into a Moving On property in March 2025. When he arrived, it was evident that Dylan had experienced a challenging childhood, with several family relationships breaking down.
Dylan informed us that he has difficulty with retaining information, concentration and had been excluded from several schools due to his behaviour. He had never been assessed for any developmental disorders, and had not received any mental health support previously. When this was offered at move in, Dylan declined stating he did not need any support and that he was fine.
After a joint meeting with his support worker, and his Nana, Dylan’s support worker identified that he displayed signs of ADHD and could benefit from being assessed. He was referred internally for some mental health support, and some assistance to seek a diagnosis.
When he first accessed the internal mental health support, he was very guarded and identified that he finds it difficult to open up to new people or speak to them at all. After a few meetings, Dylan began to discuss more with his mental health support worker and identified that he suffers with extreme low mood and anxiety. He agreed to try some medication, and now regularly takes anti-depressants.
Dylan was also given support to access an ADHD diagnosis, utilising his Right to Choose. Dylan will receive support from Care ADHD within 8-12 weeks, and will be assessed to determine whether he requires a diagnosis of ADHD. Dylan has also been referred to access mental health support through Derwent Clinic, to tackle his low mood and anxiety.
Dylan has decided to move in with his girlfriend’s family, as he was able to identify that his mental health needs to take priority and that living closer to his support network will allow him to do so.
