Homelessness prevention: how our charity works with young people

As a homelessness charity, we work with young people and marginalised groups who are considered to be at risk to help them understand their options and make informed decisions about their housing situation.

Information, Advice and Guidance service

Established by the charity in 1998, our Information, Advice and Guidance service (IAG) provides face-to-face, telephone and email homelessness support. This includes:

Access support if a young person is homeless right now
Identifying the barriers that are making the young person at risk of homelessness and working to address them
Investigating the pros and cons of independent living through our 'Reality Check' tool
Offering mediation services to see if the young person can work with their family to return home
Referring or signposing to a huge variety of partners and support networks to help move the young person forward

Are you a landlord?

Durham landlords and charities like Moving On can work together to prevent youth homelessness in our County, by providing young people with access properties in the private rented sector.

Charities and landlords providing safe homes in County Durham

Focused on breaking the cycle of youth homelessness in County Durham for over 30 years, our charity can offer a truly unique service for landlords with properties for rent.

As a ‘social landlord’, we acquire properties from Durham landlords and owners on a short-term basis to provide to young people who are in housing need.

We then manage the properties to a high standard, meaning that young people have a safe home and can make a fresh start.

More than just a home

By offering supported accommodation for up to one year, the young tenant can learn how to live independently in the Durham community.

What’s more, they are given the opportunity to manage themselves and their property well.
