Why We Exist

Our homelessness charity has been supporting young people in County Durham for over 30 years and now the need is even greater than ever.

The charity tackling youth homelessness in County Durham

There are many reasons why young people find themselves homeless, including relationship breakdowns, leaving care, violence and abuse and find that they need a safe place to stay.

At Moving On Durham, we believe all young people deserve a safe home and a fresh start.

Helping young people out of homelessness

Our charity helps around 200 homeless or vulnerable 16 to 25-year-olds in County Durham each year.

Thanks to our skilled and experienced support team, this help includes:

  • Providing transitional accommodation
  • One-to-one support
  • Skills building, including budgeting, relationship building and getting back into education or employment

By helping each young person to move towards their personal goals and aspirations, we aim to break the cycle of homelessness: getting them tenancy ready and preparing them to live independently.

Providing safe, local homes

Instead of owning housing stock, we rent and maintain properties from landlords and owners, providing a safe home to young people to stay in the local area.

We also recognise the importance of living close to family and friends and will accommodate (where possible) to ensure that our young people are housed near to those who are important to them.

“It was time for me to leave care but I knew that I wasn’t ready to move out into independent living as I had no idea about bills and things. Moving On was the right option for me as I wanted to live on my own and be near my friends. Joanne, my support worker comes and see me each week which is exactly what I need to help me keep on track and help me when things go wrong.”
