About Moving On Durham

As Durham’s leading youth homelessness charity, we support 16 to 25‑year‑olds who are experiencing, or are at risk of, homelessness.

Moving On Durham is one of the North East’s most established youth homelessness charities, supporting young people aged 16–25 across County Durham who are experiencing, or are at risk of, homelessness.

For more than three decades, we have worked to ensure that vulnerable young people have access not only to safe accommodation, but also to the stability, confidence, and skills they need to build independent lives.

Our Purpose: A Safe Home and a Fresh Start

We believe every young person deserves a safe, secure home and the chance to thrive. Homelessness is not simply a lack of housing - it is a barrier to opportunity, wellbeing, education, employment, and health.

Through individually tailored support, we help young people break the cycle of homelessness and move towards their goals, ambitions, and long-term independence.

Our Evolution: From Charity to Social Housing Provider

Since 1998, Moving On Durham has supported thousands of young people across the county, growing from a small, local project into a key part of the area’s homelessness response.

In 2026, we are entering a significant new phase in our development.

To strengthen our impact and improve the quality, security, and affordability of accommodation for young people, we are now working towards becoming a Registered Provider of social housing under the Housing and Regeneration Act 2008.

This will enable us to:

  • Provide high-quality, safe, and affordable supported housing
  • Increase the supply of accommodation specifically for 16 to 25-year-olds
  • Set and uphold strong governance, tenant standards, and regulatory protections
  • Reinforce long-term sustainability and accountability in how we provide homes

Becoming a Registered Provider is a natural progression of our mission and an important step in ensuring young people receive not only support, but a stable foundation for the future.

Creating a place for young people to recover, plan, and thrive.

Our Focus: Young People First

We exist to meet the needs of young people who are vulnerable or at risk of homelessness.

Our model places the development, wellbeing, and aspirations of each young person at the centre of everything we do.

We design our accommodation and support services around:

  • Safety
  • Stability
  • Personal growth
  • Life-skills and tenancy sustainment
  • Opportunities for education, employment and training

Housing is not the end point — it is the beginning of a safe, structured environment where young people can recover, plan, and thrive.

Our Approach: Strengths-Based, Sustainable and Holistic

Our multidisciplinary team includes specialist youth workers, housing professionals, and support practitioners. Together, we use a strengths-based approach to help young people address the barriers they face and build the skills required for independent living.

We focus on:

  • Developing core life-skills
  • Building financial awareness and tenancy management skills
  • Supporting emotional resilience and wellbeing
  • Working with partners across Durham to improve outcomes
  • Ensuring every young person feels respected, supported, and empowered

This blend of expertise ensures that young people not only secure a home but sustain it long-term.
