Ahmed came to the UK from Yemen as an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child. Arriving alone, he had no family to support him and was placed in Moving On’s supported accommodation. Although he spoke a little English, he had been through a lot of emotional stress and trauma. Settling into a completely new country, culture, and routine was understandably challenging at first.
Despite these challenges, Ahmed showed a strong willingness to learn and adapt. He enrolled in college to study English and worked hard to improve his language skills. Over time, he made excellent progress, growing more confident in communicating with staff, peers, and the wider community.
While living at Moving On, Ahmed also developed essential independent living skills. He learned how to budget, cook, clean, and manage his daily routines. At first, he needed support and guidance, but gradually he became more confident in making his own decisions and taking responsibility for himself.
Ahmed quickly became a positive presence in the placement. He volunteered in both the local and wider community, and also with the Children in Care Council, where he helped represent the voices of other young people. He was a great role model for his peers and often supported new arrivals, helping them feel welcome and settled.
A major milestone came when Ahmed was granted Leave to Remain in the UK. This gave him a sense of stability and security, which helped him focus on the next stage of his journey. With support from Moving On, he successfully moved into one of our dispersed properties, reflecting his readiness to live more independently while still having access to support when needed.
Since moving into his own tenancy, Ahmed has continued to thrive. He now studies and works, balancing both responsibilities successfully, and continues to be involved in activities that give back to the community. His story is a great example of how young people who arrive in difficult circumstances can flourish when they have the right support. With guidance, encouragement, and practical opportunities, Ahmed has gone from being a vulnerable teenager to a confident, capable young adult, living independently and building a positive future for himself in the UK.
