Jordan is a 19-year-old who entered supported accommodation after experiencing a period of instability, including homelessness and a lack of family support. When Jordan first arrived, they had no personal belongings, low income, and low confidence and were feeling uncertain about the future.
When Jordan came into supported accommodation, Jordan was assigned a Housing and Welfare Officer who provided regular one-to-one support. The focus was on building trust, identifying needs, and helping Jordan settle into a safe and stable environment. This included support with developing daily living skills, such as cooking, budgeting, and cleaning and assistance with mental health referrals and attending appointments. They began to engage more with peers and participated in group activities and workshops focused on confidence building and life skills.
Jordan is now in a full-time apprenticeship in optical care, working Monday to Friday and receiving a training wage. This opportunity has given Jordan a sense of purpose, routine, and financial independence. They have also started driving lessons, saving money from their wages to fund them, with the goal of passing their test by the end of the year.
Jordan is now working with their support worker on the next step: moving into their own accommodation. They have registered with the local housing authority and are exploring private renting options. Jordan’s goal is to live independently by the end of the year, and their support worker is confident they are ready for this transition.
Jordan’s story is a testament to the power of consistent, person-centred support and their own resilience. From a place of uncertainty and vulnerability, Jordan has grown into a confident and capable young adult, now on the brink of independent living.
